RUNEUAI
Critical thinking planning session

28 October Summary of RUNEUAI 08-01

Bernard Goldbach discussed the creation and use of interactive books for summarizing and enhancing learning from meetings and sessions. He demonstrated an AI-generated interactive book on the "RUNEUAI" page, highlighting features like video, transcripts, quizzes, and flashcards. The AI identifies key concepts and difficult words, aiding in learning. Bernard mentioned using Otter for transcripts and H5P for book creation, which costs €1298 annually for up to 30 students. He emphasized the utility of these tools for efficient learning and knowledge management, encouraging feedback to refine the process.

14 October Summary

Bernie Goldbach demonstrated the use of Adobe Firefly and INVIDEO for creating AI-assisted workflows. He showed how to animate images into videos using Firefly and create 15-second AI-generated videos using INVIDEO. Bernie also used ChatGPT to create an AI-assisted workflow for managing emails, calendars, and to-do lists. Participants faced challenges with INVIDEO's performance and slow processing times. Bernie emphasized the importance of practical workflows and the potential of AI tools to enhance productivity. He encouraged participants to create and upload their AI-generated videos to Flickr for a practical workflow exhibition.

7 October Summary

The Tuesday evening meeting focused on effective prompting techniques and AI tools like Google Gemini, Perplexity, and Copilot. Several people encountered challenges accessing Google Drive so we tried using gemini.google.com in a browser and made better progress. We used Gemini to summarize content. Maria O'Brien shared her experiences with Canva, highlighting several of its features for image creation. We will return to Canva AI in a later episode.

We watched the Financial Times video about Jobpocalypse and the decline in entry-level jobs due to AI.

The session also covered the importance of clear prompts, iterative refinement, and the ethical considerations of AI data usage.

We explored Trello for a system that document 10 tasks required to complete an AI Skills Card. Everyone will have Trello cards for several of the hands-on tasks that form part of the RUNEUAI programme.

We learn to think better when we can visualise data. This course explores and refines practical workflows with tools of artificial intelligence. Students learn to how to explore and refine outcomes-based workflows with AI tools. Skills learned during this training contribute to improved data literacy, critical thinking, and the ability to derive actionable insights from complex information.

Here's a breakdown of the workload involved in taking this course, starting on 16 September 2025 with Zoom sessions that lead up to a week-long residence portion in Leiria, Portugal. Course activities run through the middle of November.

Online Zoom Session

Seven two hour Zoom active learning sessions. (14 hours)

An important part of Practical Workflows with AI occurs during a series of online calls spread across the eight weeks of the programme. The first part of each call follows an agenda to cover each of the main topics in the course. The Zoom sessions integrate hands-on breakout sessions to help us complete items on our task lists. The final three sessions feature presentations of group work and are recorded for review by external assessors.

Seven one hour campfire sessions. (7 hours)

During 15 minute sessions, we share samples of work arising from attempts to enhance personal productivity through the improvement of critical thinking, often with ethical and sustainable use of AI.

One-on-one review session. (1 hour)

Individual review sessions allow everyone to show how we have used newly learned techniques to produce a higher level of personal productivity. Evidence from these sessions become part of the RUN-EU AI Showcase of Student Work.

Five days of workshops in Leiria. (40 hours)

During the in-residence portion of this course, we apply critical thinking skills to to break down simple and complex tasks. By examining case studies during afternoon workshops, we discover ways to integrate AI into daily routines through ethical and sustainable practice. As part of our coursework, we hear and see experts sharing how they have achieved unprecedented productivity through their digitally transformed workspaces. Roundtable discussions reveal the challenges we face to adapt and manage the delicate balance between technological efficiency and human creativity. This intensive training in Polytechnic Leiria addresses the crucial gap between potential and practice, equipping you with the strategies to not only coexist with AI but to thrive alongside it, turning data into decisions and insights into action.

Team Meetings. (14 hours)

Using suggestions offered during the Zoom Calls, Campfire Sessions, and our review of our Failure Files, we have set aside time for peer learning sessions that result in the successful completion of team projects.

Independent Study. (64 hours)

Expect to read, view, and listen to Practical Workflows with AI. Course notes include links to accessible ebooks, PDFs, and audio files. It takes time to master the hands-on tasks cited in the AI Skills Cards and to prepare for team meetings.
