Experiments with Remixing

Sailing into uncertainty with DX boats
Sailing into uncertainty with DX boats

I work with a crew of clever post-graduate students who have fostered a Community of Inquiry in pursuit of better understanding of Generativism. In this open blogging space, I'm sharing some working notes sourced from a Google Drive, from a SharePoint server, and from a Moodle Learning Management System.

Contributions from Larry Maguire, Frances O’Donnell, and Liam O’Connor

1. We started with a Campfire

2. Demos and Discussions

  • DEMO: Bernie shows Microsoft AI producing a short summary of what should be covered in today's session.
  •  Bernie will explain PARA while linking to Tiago Forte's video.
  • HANDS-ON Use Copilot to scan https://teachnet.ie
  • DISCUSS How do you award confidence to answers generated by an AI?

3. Activities

HANDS-ON Upload portrait image of your Atomic snippet that describes what you are doing now. Upload to [Flickr Digital Transformation Group](https://flickr.com/groups/digitaltransformation). Include a title to your upload and include your prompt as part of your upload.

4. Your Personal DX

AI can provide insights and recommendations by analyzing large amounts of data to surface useful insights and suggest optimizations for workflows.

1. AI enhances human capabilities. The value of AI lies not just in performing tasks but in augmenting human potential. The Human Element

2. Optimizes workflow by improving efficiency and productivity. Several notes point out that when used properly, AI tools can boost productivity and optimize workflows. However, there are also risks and challenges to consider.

  • DISCUSS How have you operationalized the concept of Personal Digital Transformation?

personal digital transformation is...

… leveraging technology to improve your productivity, knowledge, skills, and abilities.

… harnessing the power of digital tools to inform the decision-making process.

…. using digital technologies to allow us, our people, and organisations to develop and grow.

digital transformation is

"In essence, digital transformation is about an organisation and their people’s ability to adapt to rapid changes caused by evolving digital technologies.[...] Digital transformation is about becoming more digitally mature as an organisation."

Source: CIPD, 2021 Digital transformation in organisations and people functions

"Long-term forecasting is almost impossible for chaotic systems, and dramatic change can occur unexpectedly; as a result, flexibility and adaptiveness are essential for organisations to survive“.

6. Remixing

Deconstruction and Recombination

Kelly emphasizes that remixing involves radical deconstruction of existing elements and the ability to find and recombine these pieces to transform them into something new. This process is not limited to digital content but applies to various aspects of technology and culture.

Everything is a Remix

A fundamental principle of remixing is that all new technologies and cultural works are essentially derived from combinations of existing ones. Kelly quotes Brian Arthur, stating that "All new technologies derive from a combination of existing technologies"

Democratization of Creation

Remixing is facilitated by the widespread availability of cheap and universal tools of creation, such as smartphone cameras and video editing software. This democratization of creative tools allows more people to participate in the remixing process.

Future Impact

Kelly predicts that in the coming decades, the most important cultural works and powerful mediums will be those that have been remixed the most. This suggests that remixing will play a crucial role in shaping future innovations and cultural expressions.

Implications of Remixing

  1. Rapid Innovation: The ability to remix existing technologies and ideas can lead to faster and more diverse innovations.
  2. Cultural Evolution: Remixing allows for the continuous evolution and transformation of cultural products and expressions.
  3. Collaborative Creativity: The remixing process often involves collaboration and building upon the work of others, fostering a more interconnected creative ecosystem.
  4. Challenges to Ownership: As remixing becomes more prevalent, it may challenge traditional notions of intellectual property and ownership.

By highlighting remixing as a key force, Kelly underscores its importance in driving technological and cultural evolution in the coming decades. This concept encourages us to view innovation not as creating something entirely new, but as cleverly combining and transforming existing elements into novel forms and applications.

7. Ethics and EU AI Act

Ethics guidelines for trustworthy AI

"AI systems should empower human beings, allowing them to make informed decisions and fostering their fundamental rights. At the same time, proper oversight mechanisms need to be ensured, which can be achieved through human-in-the-loop, human-on-the-loop, and human-in-command approaches"

Keeping People Front & Centre

The AI Act

  • Address risks specifically created by AI applications.
  • Prohibit AI practices that pose unacceptable risks.
  • Determine a list of high-risk applications.
  • Set clear requirements for AI systems for high-risk applications.
  • Define specific obligations deployers and providers of high-risk AI applications
  • Require a conformity assessment before a given AI system is put into service.
  • Put enforcement in place after a given AI system is placed into the market.
  • Establish a governance structure at European and national level.

8. Final Thoughts

- Experiment

- Automate tasks

- Get insights

- Enhance creativity

- Make people central in the process

- Remain skeptical, yet curious and flexible
